Vale - Mary-Louise McLaws
ASA has sadly become aware Professor Mary-Louise McLaws, renowned Australian and international epidemiologist has died at the age of 70 after a long illness.
Highly respected by all who knew her Mary-Louise was a professor of epidemiology at the University of New South Wales for over 30 years specialising in infectious diseases. During her extraordinary career she co-wrote more than 180 research papers and supervised and supported many PhD students.
Her early research included a 1995 study on HIV/AIDS in Australia, which examined women who had acquired HIV from their male sexual partners. In 2004, Mary-Louise was sent to Beijing for two months to monitor bird flu for the World Health Organization. She also consulted Hong Kong's authorities during the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak, and helped with infection-control research in Cambodia, China, Bangladesh, Mali, Indonesia, Iran, Vietnam, Taiwan and Turkey.
Mary-Louise became "widely known to the Australian public through her media appearances" during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia. She was one of the first public advocates for mandatory face masks and the closure of the Australian border. She later advocated for mandatory vaccination, including the establishment of vaccination hubs to achieve herd immunity. In 2021 she was named by the Australian Financial Review as one of the ten "most culturally powerful people" in Australia. In 2022 Mary-Louise was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to medical research, particularly to epidemiology and infection prevention, to tertiary education, and to health administration.
The ASA committee offers our sympathies to Mary-Louise’s family, friends and colleagues. We will miss her immensely for her intelligence, enthusiasm, and kindness.
Kind regards

Sharon will be presenting the plenary "Lessons from COVID-19 and Implications for Pandemic Preparedness in the Future", Lloyd will be presenting "A Holistic Approach to Future Healthcare for Man, Animals and Our Environment", and David will be presenting the plenary "Treatment of Resistant GNBs – Now and in the Future".
The 2022 Howard Florey Oration will be delivered by Sally Roberts from Auckland Hospital, New Zealand.
The programme's symposia cover many different aspects of antimicrobials and sessions include "GNBs – The Red Plague", "Surfing the Pipeline", "COVID", "The Pros and Cons of Rapid Phenotypic Susceptibility Testing", and "AMS". In addition, we have pharmacy and EUCAST workshops on Saturday afternoon. Two literature review sessions will also be presented, including Tony Korman’s "The Year in Clinical Microbiology" and Trish Peel’s "The Year in AMS". Six proffered papers and two poster sessions are also planned for the meeting.
To promote discussion and interaction between delegates and the invited speakers, the meeting's registration includes lunches, morning and afternoon teas and admission to the Howard Florey Dinner.

Antimicrobials 2022 Cancelled
Dear ASA Members
Unfortunately, due to the surge in COVID-19 infections in most parts of Australia, the ASA Committee had made the difficult decision to postpone the Society's annual face-to-face scientific meeting. Given the excessive workload currently experienced by Australian healthcare workers the Committee has also decided a hybrid meeting at this time was not a viable alternative.
Antimicrobials 2022 registered delegates will be contacted by the conference organiser to arrange refunds. In addition, we will be contacting the invited speakers, abstract authors, members who applied for travel awards, and sponsors/corporate members over the next few days.
On behalf the Committee I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience the cancellation of Antimicrobials 2022 may cause.
The annual scientific meeting will now be held from 23 to 25 February 2023 at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
During 2022 ASA will provide a series of Antimicrobials Online sessions.
Please do not hesitate to contact ASA (info@asainc.net.au) if you have any queries.
Stay safe and well.

Transforming AMR and Surveillance with Next Generation Sequencing
Genomics is transforming modern infectious disease testing and surveillance, and expanding our understanding of pathogen evolution, and antibiotic resistance. In turn, clinical and public health professionals are changing the methods they use to research, monitor, and prevent epidemics and pandemics of high-profile infectious diseases such as influenza, tuberculosis, Ebola, and more recently, coronavirus.
In this presentation the speaker will review the broad application of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for monitoring and understanding antimicrobial resistance. Illumina NGS provides workflow and analysis solutions across the clinical and public health continuum.

Detection of B. pseudomallei using the Panther Fusion (r)
Melioidosis is an emerging infectious disease with an estimated global burden of 4.64 million disability-adjusted life years per year. A major determinant related to poor disease outcomes is delay to diagnosis due to difficulty in identification of the causative agent Burkholderia pseudomallei. Over the last 25 years advances in molecular diagnostic techniques have resulted in the potential for rapid and accurate organism detection and identification direct from clinical samples. While these methods are not yet routine in clinical practice, laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases is transitioning to culture-independent techniques. As such this project aims to evaluate the Panther Fusion(r) in the diagnosis of melioidosis directly from patient blood samples, and therefore decrease time to diagnosis and ideally improve patient outcomes.

Information overload? Using healthcare data to fight AMR and benefit patients with Infectious Diseases
Infectious Diseases, and their complications, have always been important to mankind. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated our susceptibility to the far-ranging effects of a single infectious pathogen and the fragility of our global, regional and local healthcare systems.
Other infectious threats, especially Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) may pose an even greater threat to the world in the years to come. At the same time, our overall technological capacities have increased and our ability to accumulate, analyze and interpret all types of data has evolved to a significant extent.
The goal of this talk is to explore the various sources of healthcare-related data available and how we can currently analyze and use them in a practical and constructive way to increase their health and economic value and benefits: to improve health outcomes of patients and render healthcare more cost-efficient.

POSTPONED Upcoming Session
Tuesday 10th August 2021 | 1400 – 1500 AEST
The Year of Therapeutics (Please click the icon below for Calendar Reminder)
The Year in Therapeutic schedules for Tuesday, 13th April 2021 has been postponed to Tuesday 10th August 2021.
As originally planned the Symposia will be a 60 minute live interactive session present by Prof. Anton Peleg and chaired by John Turnidge.
Speaker
Anton Peleg
The Alfred Hospital and Monash University Anton Y. Peleg is Professor of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology and the Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital and Monash University. He is also a research group leader in the Department of Microbiology, Monash University. His research spans clinical to basic research, with a focus on hospital-acquired infections, antimicrobial resistance, infections in immunocompromised hosts and understanding mechanisms of disease caused by hospital pathogens. He has a particular clinical interest in complex infections in highly vulnerable patient groups, including patients with cystic fibrosis, lung and stem cell transplant recipients, and infections in patients with burns or in intensive care.
His laboratory research program focuses on the mechanisms of pathogenesis of important hospital-acquired pathogens. More specifically, Acinetobacter baumannii, an emerging gram-negative bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive bacterium, and Candida albicans, the most common human fungal pathogen. The Peleg lab combines state-of-the-art sequencing technologies and targeted bacterial and fungal genetic techniques with exciting in vivo infection model systems (mammalian and non-mammalian [Caenorhabditis elegans and Zebrafish]) to characterise the role of novel genes in virulence and antimicrobial resistance. Our over-arching goal is to identify new targets that may be amenable for future drug development, with a focus on microbial virulence, persistence and adaptation.

Antimicrobials Online
Dear ASA members
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the Australian Society for Antimicrobials (ASA) committee has cancelled the Society's annual scientific meeting that was due to be held in Brisbane 25 - 27 February 2021.
The committee, however, believes it is essential ASA continues to facilitate the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge in the field of antimicrobials and encourages communication and cooperation between those actively engaged. After examining the options available to continue its educational activities ASA is developing "Antimicrobials Online".
Antimicrobials Online will provide monthly live educational sessions. The sessions will typically be 1 to 1.5 hours. The live format will enable delegates to participate in the question and answers session following each presentation. All presentations will be recorded and will be available to all ASA members.
We are working with our conference organisers, ICMS, in developing a commercial platform that will provide the opportunity for members to submit abstracts for the poster sessions. The poster sessions will also have "live sessions" once again enabling discussion with the presenters. We are also working closely with our Foundation Members who will be able to hold "industry sessions" similar to the successful breakfast and lunch industry sessions held at the annual scientific meeting. The platform will also provide networking opportunities for members.
We are currently putting together the sessions that will be presented over the next twelve months. We welcome session ideas from our members. The first session is planned later this year and will be a EUCAST workshop.
Antimicrobials Online will be free to all ASA members. Non members will be able to join the sessions by becoming an ASA member (https://www.asainc.net.au/Membership).
ASA members will be updated on the development of "Antimicrobials Online" and we hope you will be able to participate
In the mean time on behalf of the ASA Committee please keep safe and healthy.
Kind regards
Geoffrey Coombs
ASA President

Australian Passive AMR Surveillance (APAS): learnings from long term trend analysis 2006-2017
APAS was established by the Commission in 2015 with the support of Queensland Health, which enabled access to the OrgTRx system as the information technology infrastructure. APAS collects, analyses and reports on de-identified patient level AMR data contributed by 10 public and private pathology services across Australia. These laboratories detect AMR in isolates referred from public and private hospitals, aged care homes and community settings. APAS includes data captured from January 2015 from all contributing laboratories; and historical data from four of those laboratories; there are currently over 50 million AMR records from 2006 to 2018.
The symposium will provide an overview of long term trends for some significant resistances in Australia, including methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus, fluoroquinolone non-susceptibility in Escherichia coli, and vancomycin non-susceptibility in Enterococcus faecium. The implications for antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, and Australia’s response to AMR will be examined via a facilitated audience discussion.

Advances in Microbial Genomics for Public Health and Clinical Microbiology Symposium
Given the dynamic and dispersed nature of pathogenic microbes and the relentless rise of superbugs that are resistant to almost all classes of antibiotics, preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases in humans, in animals, and in our food and water will require timely, effective and high-resolution responses. Genomics is revolutionizing all aspects of microbiology and in forward thinking countries around the world is transforming approaches to controlling the spread of public health and clinical microbiological pathogens.
Doherty Applied Microbial Genomics will be hosting a one-day symposium at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection & Immunity, entitled “Advances in Microbial Genomics for Public Health and Clinical Microbiology” that will critically examine the impact of microbial genomics on public health and clinical microbiology practice overseas and in Australia, and show how this cutting edge technology is helping protect the public from the threat of infectious diseases.
Confirmed speakers include international experts Prof Jennifer Gardy from the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and Dr Phil Ashton from Public Health England, as well as national experts in the fields of applied microbial genomics, epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance that includes Prof Eddie Holmes from the University of Sydney, Prof Darren Trott from the University of Adelaide, Prof Jodie McVernon from the University of Melbourne and A/ Prof Torsten Seemann the Lead Bioinformatician at Doherty Applied Microbial Genomics.
The target audience are researchers, clinicians, epidemiologists, public health professionals and veterinarians.
